Keynote Speakers

Morning Keynote
We are pleased to welcome Laura Stack, Founder of Johnny's Ambassadors, to share The Dangerous Truth About Today's Marijuana: Johnny Stack's Life and Death Story for the morning plenary. Laura Stack's 19-year-old son, Johnny, died by suicide on November 20, 2019, after becoming psychotic from dabbing high-THC marijuana concentrates. In this session, Laura will share the story of Johnny's marijuana addiction from a parent's point of view, a poignant chronicle of the shocking descent from innocence to eventual suicide, in hopes of helping others talk to young adults about the impacts of marijuana use on mental health.

Afternoon Keynote
We are excited to welcome Dr. Kurt Michael, the JED Foundation's Senior Clinical Director, as the afternoon keynote speaker to present Postvention Guidance: A Roadmap for Support and Prevention for Campus Communities. Dr. Michael leads the postvention consulting process at JED, and works with universities, colleges, K-12 schools, and districts to evaluate and strengthen their suicide prevention systems and to adopt flexible and effective postvention guidelines and procedures. In addition to his role at JED, he maintains faculty appointments including Adjunct Professor, Huntsman Mental Health Institute, University of Utah Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, Child Psychiatry Division and Research Professor, University of Oregon.
