College Student Mental Health: Future Directions
Micky Sharma, PsyD, The Ohio State University, will present on the ever change direction of college counseling center! The work in college and university counseling centers has shifted significantly over the years and the COVID-19 pandemic caused unprecedented changes in the delivery of clinical services, training, outreach and consultation for counseling center staff. This presentation will discuss the changes to counseling services that have occurred and effective strategies to consider moving forward on your campus. The position paper published in 2023 by The Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD) will be incorporated into the presentation. Finally, the importance of self-care and resilience, both professionally and personally, for counseling center staff will also be discussed.
Building Sustainable Mental Health Partnerships for Student Well-Being
Julie Cameron and Christi Valentini Lacker of PreventionFIRST! will join us to discuss their work on The Ohio Wellness Campus Collaborative (OWCC) and Rise & Thrive Initiatives! The Ohio Wellness Campus Collaborative (OWCC) and Rise & Thrive initiatives foster impactful partnerships between colleges, universities, and their surrounding communities to enhance student well-being and mental health awareness. Funded by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, these programs provide a unique approach to addressing student mental health and behavioral health through collaboration with both on- and off-campus partners. This session will offer practical insights into how campus-community partnerships can strengthen mental and behavioral health efforts. Participants will learn about the evidence-based frameworks guiding OWCC and Rise & Thrive, focusing on how to build sustainable programs that support diverse student populations, including those at regional and satellite campuses. A panel of three mentor schools-former campus-community grantees now serving as mentors-will share their experiences, discussing effective interventions, strategies for partner selection, and lessons learned along the way. The panel will highlight how these partnerships have adapted to meet the evolving mental health needs of students and provide valuable resources for promoting mental health and well-being. Through this presentation, attendees will gain practical tools and best practices for establishing and sustaining campus-community collaborations that promote student mental health and behavioral health. They will also learn about evidence-based initiatives and strategies for addressing mental health challenges across diverse student groups, leaving with actionable steps to create supportive, resilient campus environments.
Take care,
Chris
