Good afternoon stakeholders,

Happy Friday! Please see below for details on two of the fantastic breakout sessions being offered at the OPCSMH 6th Biennial Conference on May 18th, 2023!

Breaking Down Silos & Building New Partnerships: Next Gen Community-University Partnerships

We are thrilled to be joined by Gavin Luter, PhD, Clinical Professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison & Managing Director, UniverCity Alliance, University of Wisconsin-Madison as he will go in depth on how the University of Wisconsin-Madison created long-term meaningful and transformative community partnerships with local governments using the UniverCity Alliance strategy in his presentation, Breaking Down Silos & Building New Partnerships: Next Gen Community-University Partnerships.  This presentation will share insights from their quest to break down institutional silos and help facilitate local government-university partnerships. This required building new structures that can leverage existing university opportunities. Dr. Luter will also reflect on best practices in forming, maintaining, and evaluating partnerships based on work they did with the Rise & Thrive and the Ohio Wellness Campus Collaborative efforts. Participants will be encouraged to reflect about the specific changes to higher education structures and cultures needed to better facilitate community engagement to address complex social problems.

Culturally Responsive Engagement of Students Living with Psychosis

NEOMED will be very well represented as Nicholas Dunlap, M.Ed, LPCC, FIRST Consultant & Trainer, (BeST) Center, NEOMED, and Crystal N. Dunivant, MSW, LSW, FIRST Consultant & Trainer, (BeST) Center, NEOMED, present Culturally Responsive Engagement of Student Living with Psychosis. Research has shown that early identification and intervention when someone experiences a first episode of psychosis leads to significantly improved outcomes. However, systemic racism and oppression can contribute to lack of engagement and longer pathways to care for Black, Latinx, and other students that have been historically oppressed. Culturally responsive services and providers can foster a safe and affirming environment for students seeking campus connections and partnerships. This training will identify the relationship between structural disadvantage, culture, race, and ethnicity in young people living with psychosis. The training will further explore emerging strategies and promising practices that promote collaboration, trust, self-determination, and empowerment to increase student well-being and connection.
