Good afternoon stakeholders,

Please see below for details on two of the exciting presentations being offered at the OPCSMH 6th Biennial Conference on May 18th, 2023, at Quest Conference Center in Columbus, Ohio!

I am Deaf! Do You Know How to Include Me Too? Understanding the Needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students: Considerations for Inclusive Practices

Language and communication are what connects us to other human beings which in turn, brings meaning, purpose, and joy to our lives. When we fail to include those with hearing loss or deafness and their concomitant communication differences in our understanding and attention to building diverse, equitable and inclusive environments, we exclude a whole community of individuals who strive for acceptance and accessibility in the classroom and campus activities. Deaf and hard of hearing persons are not well understood and often overlooked when we think of diversity. Indeed, deaf people are part of a cultural and linguistic minority that have been historically and systematically oppressed. Maria O'Neil Ruddock, PsyD and Sandra Hatibovic, BS of the Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center/Community Center for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (CCDHH) will provide participants with an appreciation of the differences between deaf and hearing cultures, effective communication strategies to be more inclusive of deaf and hard of hearing peers, as well as discuss the various forms of accommodations that promote inclusive and accessible practices in the classroom and in the college community.

Taking the Leap: Using the embedded counseling model to promote access and inclusivity to ensure student success

Jennifer Radt, MSW, LSW, Dalziel Reliford-Stone, MA, LPCC-S, Whitney Richardson, M.Ed, LPCC, and Gianluca Bruno, LPCC-S of the University of Cincinnati Clermont join us to discuss how they utilized its embedded counseling model to address a rising need for services and shifting staffing models. The embedded counseling model allowed them to be flexible with service delivery, while remaining student centered. The model also ensures that the unique culture of each college will be considered in terms of service delivery to provide an inclusive counseling practice. Participants who attend this session will learn about the benefits and challenges of the embedded counseling model, develop an action plan for implementing the embedded counseling model on their campus, and identify strategies to ensure culturally appropriate and accessible services to marginalized students within potential embedded locations.
