Hello stakeholders,

Please see below for details on two of the exciting presentations being offered at the OPCSMH 6th Biennial Conference on May 18th, 2023, at Quest Conference Center in Columbus, Ohio!

Implementing an Interprofessional Suicide Prevention Curriculum at Your Institution

The majority of licensed counselors, social workers, clinicians, and other behavioral health providers do not receive adequate (if any) suicide prevention education and risk assessment training while attending higher-education programs to receive their degrees. However, these are the same professionals that individuals at-risk for suicide often seek out for help to manage and treat their suicidality. Austin Lucas, BS, Program Director, Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation, joins us to discuss how your institution of higher education can adopt the Interprofessional Suicide Prevention Curriculum at no cost. The Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation (OSPF) funded a multi-institution effort to design, implement, and revise a suicide prevention course to meet contemporary needs of health professions students. Adopting the World Health Organization’s (WHO, 2010) Interprofessional Education approach, the course provides students an introductory and intermediate set of activities and competencies in suicide prevention. The course content is drawn from multidisciplinary resources and perspectives including, but not limited to, counseling, ethics, law, nursing, medicine, psychology, public health, and social work. Participants will receive an overview of key findings and outcomes from the original course development and implementation, as well as how to maintain fidelity when implementing the course on their campuses.

(Out)Reach for the Stars!: Creating Counseling Center Outreach Opportunities for Marginalized Populations

University Counseling Centers have primarily focused their outreach efforts in a cookie cutter way to spread messages about counseling center services and a variety of other mental health topics. Phil Hughes, MA, LPCC, Staff Clinician, Assistant Director of Outreach, Bowling Green State University Counseling Center,  will engage participants and encourage them to become more cognizant of who they are attempting to reach in their outreach efforts, brainstorm ideas, and identify solutions to reach marginalized populations on their campuses. He will also discuss the efforts the BGSU Counseling Center is making to reach marginalized populations on campus through outreach. Participants will identify campus partners they can collaborate with to build outreach efforts to reach marginalized populations on their campuses and how to how to better build suicide prevention efforts on their campuses. Additionally, participants will discuss the importance of outreach as a preventative intervention for mental health on campuses.
